We are well into September, cash fed cattle continue to climb and the chatter is they may continue to do so for the rest of 2023 and into 2024. When looking at this month’s projections it is easy to gravitate towards the red so let’s start there. Low performing calves and yearling colored steer and heifers are showing a loss, but I wouldn’t let these numbers deter you and encourage you to run your own personalized projections. Dollars are there for fed cattle. Cost of gain in these projections is conservative for each scenario. Take the time to calculate your own real cost of gain so you can have a competitive edge in buying cattle.
Right now, it appears the real money might be both TMR and self-feeder Holsteins. Holstein basis in these scenarios is -$10.00/cwt but can vary greatly and again cost of gain is not reflective of everyone’s operation, but certainly promising for those looking to fill pens. Never fed Holsteins and these numbers are making you consider it? Dollars are there, but make sure you are in the right mindset. Cost of gain may be higher, performance may be lower, days on feed may be greater and management will be slightly different than a traditional pen of colored steers or heifers.
