March projections are coming out after one of the biggest winter events we have seen in the Midwest this winter. A bit of red this month in the profit/loss column across colored cattle which continues to be driven by the higher feeder calf prices. Profitability in the feedlot sector overall remains strong, with fed cattle prices continuing to fuel the feeder as fed cattle supplies remain tight. Recent projections favor the colored heifer over steers again this month, and dairy and beef-x-dairy calves continue to show profit in this market as good options for those needing to keep pens full.

A reminder that these generic crushes do not take the place of specific individual projections for your own yard, where managing corn basis and local byproduct costs are still creating favorable profit scenarios for most of our clients. As always contact your Form-A-Feed representative to work out detailed RDR projections to dial-in your specific cost-of-gain.

With wetter weather, we are rudely reminded of the harsh reality weather has on cattle feeding. Maintaining pens to help control foot issues, managing feed ingredients to reduce shrink, and cleaning bunks will all help reduce the cost of gain and your bottom line. Have questions?
