Harvest is well underway, and the fall run is upon us! This month’s projections have a little more optimism, but talks in the country reflect uneasiness around the market and cost of feeders with many reflecting back to 2015 cattle feeding. Holsteins continue to show consistent money, and heifers are tending to pencil out more favorably as well. As we start to run new projections make sure you are valuing your new crops and commodities correctly for your own personalized projections.
A lot of discussion this year around calves pertains to the upfront cost of purchase these calves and protecting that major investment. Just as important as managing your financial risk is managing the starting nutrition. Nutrition is the foundation of health and performance in the feed yard. Understanding the stressors your cattle are going through such as where they are coming from, prior nutrition, and your plan with them will help you set yourself up for success with a group of calves.
