A rally in the feeder cattle market the past month has brought prices back to previous highs and this month’s projections are reflecting it. Not a lot of opportunity for profit showing in the colored steer and heifers but continued black showing in the Holstein market. Reflecting on running projections this past year, it seems our theme was ‘buying cattle right’ and that is continuing in the final month of the year. I do want to draw attention to the fed cattle market. Despite all the red, the fed cattle market has shown to hold through some highs and many market analysts are attributing that to the strength in consumer demand. Even with increasing prices they have continued to pay for beef and as an industry I think we should be proud.

If you are running your on-farm projections, winter cattle feeding is here. Last month we talked about preparing for winter feeding and hopefully we have all done that. As I write this, we are having some of the coldest weather we have had since last winter and it is days like today that gains are ‘expensive’. Energy is going to keeping that animal. The more we help that animal stay at its thermal neutral zone by bedding, cleaning pens, adjusting windbreaks and keeping animals dry and fed, we can help soften that demand for energy. We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season to you, your family and operation. Thank you for choosing Form-A-Feed to work with you and your family!
