Swine Feeding Projections – February 12, 2018

Changes week over week:

  • Open-market purchase prices were up slightly for weaned pigs (+$0.67/head) while feeder pig prices finally stopped their upward climb and fell significantly (-$6.00/head).
  • Predicted lean hog values were down substantially for both July/August and May/June marketings (-$4.51 and -$4.25/cwt, respectively).
  • Feed costs +$0.50-0.60 per head: corn +$0.04/bushel, SBM +$12.00/ton, DDGS -$1.50/ton, lysine unchanged, and fat -$0.12/cwt.
  • Open-market weaned and feeder pig profit margins fell even further into the red (-$10 and -$3.50/head, respectively) driven in large part by a major loss of marketing value.
