CONFERENCE AGENDA
Price Floors & Peace of Mind: Producer Profitability in a Volatile World
Garren Bellis, Compass Ag Solutions
Have you ever spent too much time worrying about something you can’t control? It doesn’t sit well. Join us for a discussion on what you can manage when it comes to market price risk, and how to apply that management in your operation.
Common Sense Management of Feed Efficiency
Allison VanDerWal, M.S. and Brad Sik, Form-A-Feed
Improving feed efficiency provides opportunity to improve the bottom line of an operation. Technologies and feed additives have been introduced over the years which not only save the producer money, but also play a critical role in keeping beef affordable for the consumer. However, operational management practices can oftentimes be overlooked thus costing producers money and in some cases taking away from the efficiency gained from these technologies. In this session, we will discuss some of the managerial practices we need to implement in order to achieve operational efficiency.
Silage Management Economics for Cattlemen
Troy Brown, Form-A-Feed
This discussion will focus on the hidden costs associated with silage shrink. The expenses, causes, and best management practices to prevent silage shrink will be addressed. Do not miss this session if improving profitability is important to your business.
What’s New in Protein Balancing Beef Rations
– Dr. Alfredo DiCostanzo, University of Nebraska
Balancing protein (or amino acid) needs in beef cattle is tricky. Young calves, particularly those raised in a calf nursery, have vastly different needs than those raised by mom. At a certain weight, all of this changes dramatically. Older ( and heavier) cattle require that we balance protein fractions to meet the needs of rumen microbes and the animal. This session will help simplify these complex interactions so you can ask the right questions of your nutritionist.
Optimizing Implant Strategies with Nutrition & Time
– Dr. Grant Crawford, Merck Animal Health
Implants remain the most economically beneficial animal health technology available for feedlot cattle producers. Selection of the ideal implant program will depend on several factors, including type and size of cattle, marketing goals, labor and facilities, and current implant regulations. This presentation will discuss these factors as well as discuss the ideal implant programs for various situations.
What we know, what we don’t know, what we wish we knew―Handicapping how this cattle cycle will play out
Dr. Lee Schulz, Iowa State University
Join us for this interactive presentation as we take a look at what may impact producer profitability in the coming years, including cattle and beef prices, domestic demand, exports, crop supplies and prices, and more.
Risk Management Panel
Dr. Lee Schulz, Iowa State University, Tim VanDerWal, Wanda State Bank, Garren Bellis, Compass Ag Solutions
Managing risk in the cattle business has never been more important. Our panel made up of multiple perspectives of ag economy, ag lending, insurance and hedging professionals will be available to share their experiences and watchouts using risk management tools for today’s cattle business. A Q&A session you won’t want to miss!
Breakout Sessions
Beef-on-Dairy Cross-Feeding Strategies
– Taylor Klipp, M.S., Iowa State University
Rumen development is important for dairy-raised calves. Starch is a driver for weight gain and rumen development, but high-concentrate diets fed over an extended period increases the risk of acidosis and liver abscesses later in life. Beef × dairy calves are proving to be profitable and a consistent product for packers. We need to capitalize on this opportunity and dial in our management practices to efficiently raise quality beef × dairy calves.
Silage Face Management
– Troy Brown, Form-A-Feed
In this session proper forage face management will be addressed. Facing equipment options, strengths & weaknesses, along with do’s and don’ts will be addressed.
Practical Approaches to Cow-Calf Mineral Programs
– Alfredo DiCostanzo, University of Nebraska
The modern beef cow meets the new modern mineral requirements, with practical advice on how to best apply these supplemental strategies to your cowherd
