January 15, 2018 Hog Feeding Projections

Changes over the previous two weeks:

  • Open-market purchase prices were stronger for both weaned and feeder pigs (+$7.51 and +$5.01 per head, respectively).
  • Predicted lean hog values were up modestly for both June/July and April/May marketings (+$0.78 and +$1.52/cwt, respectively)
  • Feed costs +$0.60-0.70 per head: corn +$0.01/bushel, SBM +$2.00/ton, DDGS +$6.25/ton, lysine -$1.16/cwt, and fat +$0.30/cwt.
  • The open-market weaned and feeder pig profits took a substantial step deeper into the red (-$8.00 and -$3.50/head, respectively) with higher purchase and feed costs more than offsetting the increase in lean hog values.
