Position Objective:

The Health and Safety Coordinator is expected to meet the qualifications as outlined below.  This position is vital to the overall success of our organization as a manufacturer of Animal Food and Nutrition Products, specifically in developing and maintaining a strong Safety Culture within plant personnel and delivery personnel.  As a Health and Safety Coordinator you must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. You must also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multi-disciplinary workforce is essential.

This role comes with high expectations and is required to lead and support the company in its mission of feeding the world through professionalism, quality products and innovative solutions.  In this position, you are expected to ultimately work under the guidance and supervision of the Vice President of Operations.  In addition, you will work in cooperation with existing staff, that support and enhance your role.  Set an example of integrity and ethical practice which mirrors the company image and sets a standard of conduct for company personnel. Communicate with employees to maintain their sense of involvement and support. Adheres to company objectives and goals.


Position Reporting:  This position reports to the V.P. of Operations


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Staff Support for Safety Committee including minute taking and agendas
  • Collaborate with Plant Manager and Production Support Supervisors to monitor compliance and identify safety issues
  • Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees working and performing routine documented plant walk throughs
  • Direct and record all accident investigations
  • Intervene to prevent unsafe conditions and/or actions
  • Document and maintain records of Safety Meetings including documentation of attendees
  • Develop Safety Training schedules, implement training as per schedule and maintain documentation of training
  • Develop and publish Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as required by regulation and as needed to provide consistent training and procedures.
  • Collect and maintain First Report of Injury forms and report information to management and Workers Compensation provider
  • Maintain and post Safety records on OSHA Form 300 as required by OSHA
  • Advise management of Safety risks and recommended changes to existing policies
  • Generate an attitude of team building
  • Attends health and safety industry training in order to stay abreast of industry changes
  • Other duties as directed by the company

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA Degree in safety management or relevant field is preferred
  • Experience in production and/or manufacturing environment preferred
  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines (OSHA – DOT - EPA)
  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
  • Good knowledge of animal food manufacturing processes
  • Possess a good network of contacts with expertise in Health and Safety

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Graduate
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated- ability to set priorities and follow though
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to motivate others and work well in a team environment
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
  • Ability to speak in front of groups
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally travel to remote locations and training sessions including possible overnight stays
